Remington 700 SPS Tactical

Friday, January 19th, 2007

Well, the beginning of the year, combined with SHOT show makes for some exciting times for shooters, including snipers. If you head over to Remingtons web page and look at their Premier Dealer line of firearms, you will get a look at the new 700 SPS Tactical. They also have a new SPS Varmint rifle which uses the same barreled action as the 700P and VS line of rifles, but the SPS Tactical is a little different. It has a 20″ barrel and instead of the flemsy and not so good injection molded stock of the Varmint version, it uses the Hogue overmolded stock. This is the same stock that is used on the FN PBR (see review), in fact, this rifle looks to be aimed directly at the PBR in terms of competition. The price on the SPS Tactical is just a bit more than the SPS-Varmint and should have a street price of under $550. At that price and with the 700 action and BDL floorplate, I would have a hard time finding a good reason to go with the PBR.

We have a SPS-Varmint already and the review will be up in a few weeks, but it looks like we’ll be getting a SPS Tactical in for review as well!

Factory Savage F-Class rifle in 6.5×284

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Savage is showing that they have a new for 2007 F-Class factory rifle chambered in 6.5×284 Norma. This is one of the very few factory rifles chambered in this long range cartridge. It would be great to see this cartridge continue to grow in popularity. Loaded with the sierra 142gr or Lapua 139gr, this cartridge is great at long ranges. Of course, the other specialty VLD & ULD bullets also work great (some even better).

Myth Buster’s Revisit Shot Through the Scope

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

I’m sure after many responses from enthusiasts like you that recognized the error in the scope they used to “bust” the myth, the show Myth Busters has recently revisited the myth. Sources say they used a PU scope with .30-06 FMJ ammo. They did get one shot that traveled through and penetrated to fatal depths in the gelatin and another that was a ‘maybe’. I did not hear how many total attempts they made, but in the end the verdict was “Plausible” instead of “Busted”.

I have not heard when they will air the revisit, so you’ll have to keep your eyes open. Some of my data above may not be 100% accurate, but it appears to be pretty reliable.
